Hokkaido Blend Single-Serve Pour-Over - Disposable Filter Bag

$42.00 USD $39.00 USD Sale

Single-Serve Disposable Filter Bag (Cup-On) is an ingenious coffee-brewing method that has been around in Japan for quite a while but is lesser known in other parts of the world: Cup-on single-serve drip coffee bags (AKA  Single-Serve Disposable Filter Bag). Several names know them, but the common idea behind them is the same: The perfect amount of ground coffee for making one cup of coffee is contained within a filter bag. This filter bag is equipped with a clever piece of paper engineering to stabilize it safely onto your cup. You must pour hot water onto the ground coffee inside the filter bag and, voilà! You have a fresh cup of dripped coffee within the shortest time and with the minimum possible amount of work and equipment involved.

What sets the Cup-On single-serve drip coffee bags apart from other pour-over filters in the market is its unique '4-point system.' This innovative design prevents the coffee filter from soaking after pouring, ensuring a consistent and flavorful brew. Even among the variety of cup-on filters in Japan, this particular filter stands out as one of the most premium types, designed for the discerning coffee lover.

FAQ Hokkaido Blend Single-Serve Pour-Over

How do I brew it?

Tear open the bag, hang the filter over your cup, and slowly pour hot water (about 200°F) over the grounds. The full cup brews in about 3 minutes. No machine, no cleanup.

What cup size does it make?

Each bag brews one 8–10 oz cup. For a stronger cup, use less water. For a lighter brew, add more.

Do I need any special equipment?

No — just hot water and a cup. It works at home, in the office, at a hotel, or anywhere you can boil water.

What does Hokkaido Blend taste like?

It's a smooth, well-balanced blend with a slightly sweet, nutty character inspired by the clean flavors of Hokkaido, Japan. Medium roast, no bitterness.

This is our most popular blend and the whole bean and K-Cup of the same blend available.

Is this coffee specialty grade?

Yes. We use specialty-grade beans roasted in small batches for consistent quality in every bag.

How does this compare to a K-Cup?

K-Cups require a Keurig machine and brew automatically. Our pour over bags need nothing but hot water — making them ideal for travel, camping, or anyone without a pod machine. The manual brew also gives you more control over strength and flavor.

What about the Expiration Date?

We ship all our freshly roasted coffee from Japan right after roast. Most of our products have an expiration date of 1 year from roasting, so you will have enough time to enjoy your coffee! The date of expiration is printed on each package.

How long is the coffee good once opened?

The coffee is good for one year from roasting even after you open the package.  However, we strongly encourage you to seal the coffee in an air-tight container, such as multiple zip lock bags, and store it in a dark, cool place or refrigerator for to retain good taste.  We also recommend Airscape which is popular among coffee drinkers and works very well.  Here is a link to get Airscape products from Amazon.

What is the best way to store coffee?

We suggest coffee be refrigerated but not frozen. If you decide to refrigerate, please make sure that you isolate the coffee from other food by either putting it in an air-tight canister or using multiple layers of zip-lock bags.  We also recommend Airscape, which is popular among coffee drinkers and works very well with coffee as well. Here is a link to get Airscape products from Amazon.

I am worried about radioactive materials in products made in Japan.

Our coffee is 100% safe from radioactive materials. Coffee beans are imported responsibly from outside Japan, and we freshly roast each batch of coffee.

What is the best water to use for Coffee?

Coffee is best prepared with filtered water with a moderate amount of minerals. If you have a water filter system, it is the best. If you use bottled water, try avoiding ones with "Added Minerals" as they tend to break the coffee flavor, you do not want distilled water either since some minerals are suitable to bond with the coffee molecule.

    TASTING PROFILE

Hokkaido Blend Coffee has a crisper taste and cleaner mouthfeel than usual coffees. It retains a rich aroma and has a pleasant bittersweet taste that spreads slowly inside the mouth and lingers on the back of the palate. The taste profile has a unique aroma, full-bodied, sweet, and mellow taste.

    Pro Tip:

    • Use a spoon to lightly tap the coffee grounds to flatten the surface; this makes the coffee taste better as the hot water will be distributed equally.
    • The package also comes with a cut line that allows you to open the package easily.

Also Available in Whole Bean or Gift Box Set

    TASTE OF SUMIYAKI ROASTING

Charcoal roasting is a unique coffee roasting process that involves roasting coffee beans over charcoal, giving the coffee a smoky, complex flavor profile. Charcoal roasting is believed to preserve the bean’s natural oils and flavors, making it an excellent option for any coffee connoisseur looking for a unique and flavorful cup of joe. The process is said to bring out bean's sweetness while also adding a subtle smokiness that can really enhance the flavor.

The process of charcoal roasting eliminates excess water in the coffee beans which causes an acidic taste. Because of the chemical reaction taking place during the roasting, its heat can penetrate the core of the beans and get rid of the water. The coffee beans are baked evenly from the core to the outer layers.

Good coffee and easy brew method

This brand works better for brewing than other ones I've used in the past. This is perfect for a perfectly measure dose of coffee, and the mechanism for the pour over fits on the mug nice. The coffee is really nice too.

Fun and nice tasting but not super practical

This coffee is tasty and a lot of fun to try, but it's not super practical. I enjoyed opening the little pour-over package. It only fits on a small 8oz size mug, but that's okay because it makes a very small serving. You're supposed to use 5 ounces of water, and some is lost in the process, so you end up with very little coffee! It does taste nice though. I tried re-brewing the grounds again, thinking I could get a little more value, but the second cup is weak.Unique and fun, this might be nice for traveling, but not practical for everyday use.

    Tastes amazing

These coffee packets were great, and very easy to use. The coffee is a dark roast and tastes great and smells amazing. The package was easy to setup on a smaller cup/mug, and keep in mind that it would not work on large ones because the instructions says to pour 5 oz of water, which I recommend sticking to as it is the optimum amount for the maximum taste. The only con is the amount of packaging per cup that is used. I wish there was another way to get that coffee without all the wrapping it comes with.

Japanese Single Pour-Over Coffee 12 count

A product of Japan this set includes 12 individual packs of pour-over-coffee. If unfamiliar with the process directions for brewing are printed on the pouch and 5 ounces of boiling water is required for each cup. The process is not difficult but key is pouring slowly if possible with a gooseneck kettle and pausing to let the small amount drip through before adding more water.I was intrigued by the roasting method that uses charcoal which infuses the beans with a smoky note. The flavor did not disappoint with a delicious smooth coffee taste. The expected smoky element is present which adds complexity but does not overpower the basic coffee taste. To estimate shelf-life at the time of this review in March 2024 the Best By date is 15 months in the future but dates will vary. Excellent.

    Convenient, bold

This coffee is very convenient to have, especially while traveling. It has a bold taste, but not bitter. Becareful when you open the pouch.. you just need to press it open gently and it only opens on one side. All writing is in Japanese, but I translated for you. pls see picture.I drink my coffee sweet with cream and it was delicious.

Individual filter packets. Good quality coffee, portable package, slightly bitter taste

Japanese Single-Serve Pour-Over Coffee comes in a sealed foil envelope. Inside the envelope is a paper filter pouch with some cardboard fold-outs on either side. You cut the top of the pouch, then place the cardboard foldouts on either side of the cup as shown in the photo. Then you pour hot water slowly and let it drain through the filter.I was skeptical that this would work, but actually the system works quite well. It brews a dense, dark coffee. The taste of the coffee is strong with a slightly bitter taste. It seems like you do need some scissors to cut the filter pouch. Otherwise, it can give you a pretty high-quality coffee experience in a portable package. Be aware, though, that they sized the coffee to flavor only 6 ounces of coffee, no grande Americano here.

Easy to carry, costly to drink

The end result of this tasted fine -- a mildly strong, straight brew with some complex flavors I don't have the vocabulary to describe. But you have to think of this produce as two parts: The coffee itself, which is fine, and the filter device used to make it. At about $3 per package that's supposed to use 5 ounces of water (some of which will be absorbed into the grounds), you're paying over 60 cents an ounce for quality black coffee, which may be worth it to you camping or traveling, as long as you have access to boiling water and hate whatever coffee is otherwise available. (Consider that a quality Nespresso capsule runs about 80 cents for several ounces of espresso.)The physical process of making the coffee is a little different from how it's shown in the video and the listing images. The directions on the package talk about unfolding the filter assembly in a certain way and then cutting it somewhere -- vague directions that are completely skipped over in the video, where the filter is just tossed onto the cup and magically pops into place. It's cute, but it skips over the key step. What I found was when I squeezed the paper framework for the filter to widen the top to see where to cut the filter abruptly popped open along a top seam. Which seemed both useful and potentially disastrous. The video and preview images are also a bit misleading about the volume of coffee the filter is meant to produce; the package says to use 5 ounces of water slowly poured over the grounds, but the preview image shows a teakettle filling the filter almost to the brim. And the video and the photos show a full 8-ounce or larger cup of coffee. (Of course, you can and probably will use more than the 5 ounces, but that will dilute the brew.)

Good Coffee, Filter Design is Lacking

I love single-serve pour-over coffee filters for travel and have used several different brands. This coffee is very smooth and has a pleasant, nutty finish. While the coffee is delicious, the design of the filter is problematic compared to others I've used. As can be seen in the pictures, the filter only fits over a smaller mug opening. The first photo is with one of the "You are Here" series mugs, and the second is a smaller opening closer to a standard mug size. The filter also sits above the mug, so it's difficult to let the coffee steep if you want a stronger brew. For the current price, I would need the filter to be redesigned in order to purchase it again.

Good, deep taste. A little flimsy

I wanted to try this. I was intrigued by the charcoal roasted aspect of this coffee. It does have a really good taste,I had difficulty making it. Once you remove the pour over coffee pad from the foil packaging, you need to cut a slit in the top, and then unfold it and anchor the four tabs over the edge of your coffee mug. Pour 5 oz of hot water into the filter. 5 oz is just about 2/3 cup water.I ran into issues when I was pouring the water, one of the four tabs came displaced from the mug and spilled both onto the table and into my cup. I set it up again and finished pouring the water, then I just put it through my aeropress to remove the grounds that had spilled into the coffee. The coffee was good but it wasn't very hot at that point probably because I had to mess with it.I think the taste is really good, the process has flaws (at least for klutzy people like myself), but it is entirely portable if you want coffee on the go. I hate hotel coffee (I'm talking to you Hampton and Holiday Inn), so this is a good alternative. It only makes about 5 oz, and I usually drink coffee once a day, 20 oz in the morning, so this is a small portion to me. Also, I think I could probably just empty the coffee grounds into my aeropress and make it that way - delicious coffee without the wobbly process. Made in Japan.

take me from Vancouver to Hokkaido immediately

This Hokkaido Blend is impressive. The convenience of the disposable filter bag doesn't compromise the quality at all. Most importantly, the scent is nostalgic—it immediately transported me back to the cafes of Japan. A perfect morning ritual for anyone missing the Japanese coffee scene!

Sherry-san, thank you — that really means a lot to us. We’re so glad it could bring a bit of that feeling to your mornings. Appreciate you taking the time to share this. ☕

    Smooth

I've shared this with friends and family, and everyone says it smooth and not bitter. Unlike other coffees, this coffee does not upset my stomach. Very nice overall.

Linda-san, that really made our day — and how fun that your friends and family got to try it too! Hearing that it's been easy on your stomach is something we always love to know. Thank you very much!

Unique Setup, Maybe A Little Inconvenient

The coffee was tasty, that’s for sure. The foldout packaging was clever and quite unique. However, in an office with no kitchen, it was more convenient to have teabag-styled coffee than a pour over. This way, I can steep a bag in a travel mug as I’m driving to work. Please consider coffee bags as an alternative option.

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback! We're glad you enjoyed the taste and appreciated the unique packaging. We completely understand the need for convenience, especially on busy mornings, and truly appreciate your suggestion about offering coffee bags—we’ll definitely take it into consideration for future product development. ☕🙂

Drip coffee is a sign of culture!

Don't take my word for it, the TV show Yellowstone has a scene where the barista tells Jamie that slow drip coffee is a sign of cultureThis Japanese pour over coffee takes more effort to brew than simply popping a k-pod into the coffee machine but I find it has a charm all its own and it's about the same on my wallet as going to Starbucks or Peet's

Says 12 Package but gave only 4 Package

This was not a good thing when it came to the quality of this item. It said it would have 12 pcs but only had 4. Maybe bad quality of packing done. Not a good thing in my opinion.

    Enjoyable Coffee

This Japanese Single-Serve Pour-Over Coffee set provides a delightful taste of Japanese culture. Each packet provides ground hokkaido blend coffee, which rests inside a filter and cup drip apparatus. Brewing instructions are very easy to follow and are displayed on the back of each packet.I have been following the brewing instructions, which call for 5 oz of boiling water. This is a small cup of coffee, but it has a smooth, pleasant flavor that is distinct from traditional brews found in the United States.I think you could increase the amount of water a bit without compromising flavor (and I will try that at some point). At the current Amazon price, each cup of coffee is around $3, which is comparable to many US coffee houses nowadays. However, this product is imported and special, so I can understand the price.I think this would make a great gift for a coffee lover who enjoys different cultural experiences. This set is also practical to have on hand for power outages and travel/camping. The coffee drip apparatus works best on smaller coffee cups, so if you are buying this as a gift, consider adding a small coffee mug.

    Be gentle with this

Wow this thing is very light and very - is flimsy the word? "Disposable" is better. The coffee flavor is great and if you need that caffeine fix on the go this is honestly a pretty solid solution to it. But do be incredibly careful and try to use a small mug if you can. This coffee pourover is very much not built with American sensibilities in mind and you need a smaller mug to get it to work.

Fun to use, for certain times

These are really quality and tasty cups of coffee. I use them sparingly due to the cost. If you want something different or even for emergency situations where you want a quality cup, this is it. Very easy to use and disposable. Arrived quickly.

    Good coffee but expensive

This coffee was easy to make, just pouring water through the grounds and the paper filter. The resulting coffee seemed to be pretty decent but I don't know if it is good enough to justify the somewhat high price. At nearly $3 per cup, that is somewhat expensive for a plain cup of coffee considering you could get something in a coffee shop for a similar price or possibly even lower price.
