About Our Tea: The Best that Japan Can Offer
Like a fine wine, high-quality tea depends on more than pretty packaging. The leaves' age, growing conditions, and even soil fertility impact the final flavor. For us, how tea is grown and the way it’s processed is the secret to crafting a sweet, nutritious tea like no other.
We Strive for Sweeter Soil Cultivation with the Chagusaba Method
Chagusaba (茶草場) is an ancient farming method that relies on tending both man-made and natural grasslands to enhance soil fertility. This labor-intensive process takes thousands of man-hours every season, but tea farmers find it worthwhile for the crop quality it produces.
Practiced by Shizuoka farmers for centuries, grasses are grown throughout tea plantations in the summer months and later to be cut down to form an insulating layer to prevent the ground from freezing. Sugar cane and syrup are also added to the soil to enhance its sweetness.
By enriching, protecting, and revitalizing the soil beneath each tea tree, the chagusaba method sweetens the taste of each tea leave by keeping plant roots warm and well-nourished throughout the winter. As the mulch breaks down in the spring, it adds much-needed silicic aid to the base of each tree, enriching the soil and preventing roots from getting burned from too much nitrogen.
‘Dusty’ Tea is A Sign of High Quality, Really!
At first look, our deep steamed tea leaves appear broken down, even dusty. This is because the longer processing time breaks down the tea leaves, especially at their tips. This leads to powdery tea that many compare to ceremonial matcha in taste, texture, and nutrient levels.
Drinking tea leaves directly actually enhances the nutrition for your body. However, if you’re bothered by these fragments, a specially designed fukamushi teapot provides a finer mesh to filter them out.
Our Teas Contain Better Flavor with Deep Steaming Technology
After they are picked, steaming tea leaves is necessary to stop oxidation. Most green tea is steamed for 30 seconds before being rolled and dried, creating a brew that leaves you with a bitter taste.
In contrast, the sunny yet foggy conditions throughout the Shizuoka region where it grows creates a firmer tea leaf, which needs longer steaming to release the complex flavors contained within. This means that our tea undergoes ‘deep steaming’ (aka fukamushi method 深蒸し) for almost two minutes - four times longer than regular tea!
Only thick, sun-soaked leaves benefit from deep steaming. The proprietary steaming machine used for every batch was developed specifically for our tea after years of research and study. Today, it is the leader in streaming technology in Japan and the world.
Longer processing leads to a bolder flavor filled with the health-enhancing amino acid Theanine. Every cup provides a robust taste, smoother mouthfeel, and a subtle hint of sweetness, and far less astringency.

What is so special about your green tea?
Our green tea is the best-selling Japanese green tea in Japan online. The reason is simple: it tastes good, and most of our customers are repeat customers who come back for more.
Our tea is grown using the Chagusaba method. The Chagusaba Method is a traditional green tea farming method used for centuries in areas where plants such as the Japanese silver grass are cut and used as organic fertilizer between autumn and winter. Plants are cut into small pieces and are carefully placed on the ground of the farmland. This increases the ground temperature and moisture in the dirt, which fertilizes the soil better. Japanese silver grass also contains many silicic acids, which are excellent for making the dirt richer. This process is highly labor-intensive, but the tradition has been followed for centuries in the area to create the best green tea.
Read more about Chagusaba Method on our blog.

I don’t know which tea to try first. Which tea do you recommend?
We created a video and blog post about this. Please click here or on the image below.
The world of Japanese green tea is vast and wonderful, but it is sometimes confusing with all the terms used. For this reason, we have created a Glossary of Japanese Green Tea with a chart so that you can decide which one would be best for you. Please refer to Glossary of Japanese Green Tea for more information.
If you are new to green tea, we usually recommend Nozomi, which is very popular as it tastes similar to widely known Gyokuro Tea but without a high price tag.
If you want to use it for baking and cooking, powdered form matcha is excellent. You can make lattes, smoothies or simply add it to ice cream!
If you are looking for diet tea, consider our award-winning diet Pu-erh Tea. This has natural dieting elements that are much higher than other types of tea.
If you have hay fever or allergies, Benifuuki Green Tea has natural elements which block histamines and alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms of seasonal allergies, hives, and eczema.
If you want cold green tea, try our Gokuzyo Aracha Teabag. And here is an article about how you can cold brew Japanese green tea.
If you like the aroma of green tea, you would love our Aracha (Crude Tea), which has the wild aroma of green tea which tea farmers have consumed for centuries.
If you want low caffeine tea or if you want to drink tea at night, you will want to try our low caffeine Hojicha.
If you want the best of the best, no other tea can beat Issaku Premium. (limited quantity available).
We have created a whole article about how to select Japanese green tea. Please click here or click on the image below to read more about this.
-
What tea is the best to lose weight/mix in with smoothies? I saw you have a specific tea for weight loss, but it is tea leaves, and in bags, so I did not think that would work. Do you have any recommendations?
For losing weight with a smoothie, we still suggest using Diet Puerh Tea.
Since this is not a powder form, you would want to steep them first and mix them in a smoothie. You can follow the instructions under the “loose leaf tea” section of our article How to Make Green Tea Smoothies.
The other option is our matcha. Not as much as the diet tea above, matcha does have chemical properties for losing weight. You can find it here: Premium Matcha

How long is the tea good after opening?
The tea is good for one year from manufacturing, even after you open the package.
However, we strongly encourage you to seal the tea in an airtight container, such as multiple zip lock bags and store it in a dark, cool place or refrigerator for retaining good taste.
ea absorbs other odors quickly; therefore, please ensure your package is air-tight. We also recommend Airscape, which is popular among coffee drinkers and works very well with tea as well. Here is a link to get Airscape products from Amazon.
We have written an article for the best practice to store matcha and green tea. Please refer to the article for more details.

What is the best way to store green tea?
We suggest tea be refrigerated but not frozen. If you decide to refrigerate, please make sure that you isolate the tea from other food by putting it in an air-tight canister or using multiple layers of zip lock bags. Tea absorbs odors quickly, and the last thing you want is to have your tea absorb other food odors. We also recommend Airscape which is popular among coffee drinkers and works very well with tea as well. Here is a link to get Airscape products from Amazon.

I've heard that Matcha can be consumed even years after production.
We do not offer aged matcha.
All our matcha products are freshly cropped and packaged with an expiration date of 1 year from manufacturing.
Some companies indeed offer aged matcha; however, the environment to age tea has to be controlled and maintained carefully to retain the quality without the spread of bacteria for safely facilitating the aging of matcha; we do not sell this kind of matcha, and we do not recommend eating old matcha which is has not been aged safely.

What is the best water to use for Green Tea?
Green tea is best prepared with soft water with fewer minerals. If you have a water softener filter system, use the water filtered by the softener. If you use bottled water, try avoiding ones with "Added Minerals," as they tend to distort the tea flavor.
If you have access to Evian, it will taste better as Evian is known for soft water. We have written a comprehensive guide about Green Tea and Water. Click here to read the article.

I am worried about radioactive materials in products made in Japan.
Our tea is 100% safe from radioactive materials. Here is a link to an official test result of radioactive material, and it indicates that there are no radioactive elements found in our tea. (This is a link to an English Translation of the Report.) Please note that this test was conducted in 2012, one year after the Fukushima accident in March of 2011. Even after many years of the incident, we keep testing and ensuring that no harmful materials are in our tea.

I'd like to know about the different ways in which I can consume green tea. Is it good with honey, or should I just drink it plain?
In Japan, people usually consume green tea plain without adding sugar or honey. However, in other countries such as in the US and India, it is common to drink it with honey which does pair very well. Our premium green tea is mixed with fresh lemon. The tea can be enjoyed hot or cold by simply mixing with water.
New flavors are developed over one year of research and collaboration with local Japanese high school students (Shizuoka Commercial High School).
After over a year of prototyping, Arahataen is proud to introduce the newest tea taste in Japan: Green Tea with Lemon.
How to Drink
To enjoy the Green Tea with Lemon, please put two teaspoons of tea in 8 oz (a mug cup) of hot (175F) or cold water. Some people mentioned that one ½ teaspoons of hot water tastes better as hot water augments the sweetness more.
This is powdered tea, so no teapot is required. Simply add the powder to hot or cold water to enjoy.
You can also add honey to the tea for a sweeter result!
